Air traffic controllers control air traffic in and within the vicinity of the airport, and the movement of air traffic between altitude sectors and control centres, according to established procedures and policies. They authorize, regulate, and control commercial airline flights according to government or company regulations to expedite and ensure flight safety.
An air traffic controller’s job responsibilities vary from informing pilots about nearby planes or potentially hazardous conditions, such as weather, speed and direction of the wind, or visibility problems to issuing landing and take-off authorizations or instructions. To be successful in an air traffic controller’s job, one must have strong eyesight and colour vision, the ability to concentrate for extended periods and always be ready to solve problems.
