An aircraft mechanic's job involves conducting routine and special inspections of aircraft components, including landing gear, hydraulic systems, and deicers to locate cracks, breaks, leaks, or other problems, as required by regulations. They certify that maintenance meets standards, and that aircraft are ready for operation.
Typically, workers have a high school education and obtain training for aircraft mechanic jobs, although some learn on the job or enter the field after the military experience. One requires to be able to think speedily and logically and have excellent problem-solving skills for an aircraft mechanic salary.
Aircraft mechanic technicians are one of the highest-paid technical professions, as workers analyze complex problems and develop safe, workable solutions quickly to get aircraft back up in the air. Exposure to noise and vibration is part of every shift. Aircraft mechanics and service technicians work full time on rotating shifts in hangars, repair stations, or airfields. Tasks
- Read and interpret maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and other specifications to determine the feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
- Inspect completed work to certify that maintenance meets standards and that aircraft are ready for operation.
- Maintain repair logs, documenting all preventive and corrective aircraft maintenance.
- Conduct routine and special inspections as required by regulations.
- Examine and inspect aircraft components, including landing gear, hydraulic systems, and deicers to locate cracks, breaks, leaks, or other problems.
- Inspect airframes for wear or other defects.
- Maintain, repair, and rebuild aircraft structures, functional components, and parts, such as wings and fuselage, rigging, hydraulic units, oxygen systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, gaskets, or seals.
- Measure the tension of control cables.
- Replace or repair worn, defective, or damaged components, using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
- Measure parts for wear, using precision instruments.
