Archivists
Archivists appraise, edit, and direct the safekeeping of permanent records and historically valuable documents. They participate in research activities based on archival materials.
Archivists are specially trained professionals to preserve the actual material and help people obtain it. Archivists work with photographs, maps, films, paper documents, and computer records.
An archivist's jobs responsibilities entail developing policies or procedures for archives, museums or libraries, organizing informational materials, helping patrons use library resources, evaluating characteristics of archival or historical objects and ceating a library or archival databases.
To be eligible to become an archivist, one needs to graduate in history, library science, political science, archival science or public administration and can work as an archivist with coursework and some practical knowledge. Internships and performing volunteer work can also be very useful.
In addition to the required technical skills that can be learned in the process of earning the degree, candidates should acquire specific soft skills of analytical thinking and organization. They should be inquisitive, methodical and logical with excellent administrative skills.
Archivists primarily work in museums and historical sites for informational services. Colleges, universities, and government agencies also employ some archivists.
An archivist's jobs salary depends on experience, talent, position and location.
To succeed in an archivist jobs career, one must be an excellent verbal communicator with the ability to carry out independent research.
