Bailiffs maintain order in courts of law.
A Bailiff's job description includes enforce courtroom rules of behaviour. They maintain order in courtrooms, guard the jury, patrol the interior and exterior of the courthouse, escort judges, escort prisoners and maintain their custody during court proceedings, screen persons entering the courthouse using magnetometers or x-ray machines and arrest persons when arrest warrants are issued.
Court bailiffs check the courtroom for security and cleanliness and ensure the availability of sundry supplies, such as notepads, for use by judges, jurors, and attorneys, guard the lodging of the sequestered jury and also provide assistance to the public.
An associate’s degree or training in vocational school is needed for the job of a court bailiff, with some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience. Skills required include judgement and decision making, critical thinking, social perceptiveness, time management and communications.
Bailiff's job description requires knowledge of public safety and security, law and government, customer and personal service and psychology. They should familiarise themselves with computers and have some knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, internet browsing, email and presentation software.
The bailiff works with all players in a court of law that is, the judge, the jury, the public, and the defendants. Bailiffs generally find employment at local, state, and federal courts.

- Maintain order in courtroom during trial and guard jury from outside contact.
- Guard lodging of sequestered jury.
- Provide jury escort to restaurant and other areas outside of courtroom to prevent jury contact with public.
- Enforce courtroom rules of behavior and warn persons not to smoke or disturb court procedure.
- Report need for police or medical assistance to sheriff's office.
- Announce entrance of judge.
- Stop people from entering courtroom while judge charges jury.
- Screen persons entering courthouse using magnetometers, x-ray machines, and other devices to collect and retain unauthorized firearms and other contraband.
- Provide security by patrolling interior and exterior of courthouse and escorting judges and other court employees.
- Check courtroom for security and cleanliness and assure availability of sundry supplies, such as notepads, for use by judge, jurors, and attorneys.
