Billing and posting clerks compile, compute, and record billing, accounting, statistical, and other numerical data for billing purposes. They prepare billing invoices for services rendered or for delivery or shipment of goods.
Billing and posting clerks compute fees or charges. They calculate charges and generate bills by reviewing documents such as purchase orders, sales tickets, charge slips, and hospital records. They mail bills to customers and provide them with account information.
Billing clerks verify the accuracy of billing data and rectify errors, prepare itemized bills and record amounts due for items purchased or services rendered, perform bookkeeping work, including keeping records of the cost of goods or services and maintain records.
Medical billing clerks work at hospitals or clinics and collect payments from patients. They keep records of patients' account balances, generate invoices, follow up on amounts outstanding, and make arrangements with patients regarding overdue accounts.
The job of a billing clerk requires a high school diploma with some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience. The skills required include service orientation, critical thinking, and good communication. In addition, they should possess knowledge of administration and accounting, mathematics, computers and electronics, and customer relations.
Billing and posting clerks work in government and private organizations, schools, hospitals, factories and general stores. A billing clerk's job salary is commensurate to the nature of the job. They work in offices on computers.
A successful billing and posting clerk should be honest and dependable, pay attention to detail and be stress-tolerant.
