Carpet Installers
Carpet installers lay and install carpet from rolls or blocks on floors. They install padding and trim flooring materials.
Among the various tasks performed in carpet installer jobs, some include meeting with customers to judge their carpeting requirements, laying out carpet models for client choice, providing customers with accurate quotes based on their requirements and stock prices, cutting and trimming the carpet to fit along wall ends, concluding the edges with a wall trimer, inspecting the surface to be covered to determine its condition, and correcting any faultiness that might show through the carpet or cause a carpet to wear unevenly, and ordering stock from the warehouse and arranging a fitting day with the customer.
Carpet installation workers must possess knowledge of customer and personal service, mathematics, administration, management, and building and construction.
The education requirements for new carpet installation workers include a high school diploma. They must also have previous work experience as carpet installers.
Abilities that are required to perform this job include extent flexibility (the ability to bend, stretch and twist your body), problem sensitivity (being able to detect a problem), near vision and static strength (ability to exert maximum muscle force to carry objects).
To excel as carpet installers, one must have mathematical skills, coordination, monitoring skills, and quality control analysis skills. They should be critical thinkers, i.e., using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions or approaches to problems. The carpet installer salary varies from experience and skills earned.

Tasks
- Join edges of carpet and seam edges where necessary, by sewing or by using tape with glue and heated carpet iron.
- Cut and trim carpet to fit along wall edges, openings, and projections, finishing the edges with a wall trimmer.
- Inspect the surface to be covered to determine its condition, and correct any imperfections that might show through carpet or cause carpet to wear unevenly.
- Roll out, measure, mark, and cut carpeting to size with a carpet knife, following floor sketches and allowing extra carpet for final fitting.
- Plan the layout of the carpet, allowing for expected traffic patterns and placing seams for best appearance and longest wear.
- Stretch carpet to align with walls and ensure a smooth surface, and press carpet in place over tack strips or use staples, tape, tacks or glue to hold carpet in place.
- Take measurements and study floor sketches to calculate the area to be carpeted and the amount of material needed.
- Cut carpet padding to size and install padding, following prescribed method.
- Install carpet on some floors using adhesive, following prescribed method.
- Nail tack strips around area to be carpeted or use old strips to attach edges of new carpet.
