Chemists Conduct qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses or experiments in laboratories for quality or process control or to develop new products or knowledge.
The lab chemist's job is to conduct experiments and analyses of chemical substances to improve or develop new and existing products. They may specialize in one or more areas like organic, inorganic and biochemistry. One can work as a specialist chemist- like a hair chemist or cosmetic chemist who formulates and develop skin and personal care products for manufacturers. Other specialist chemists include air quality, analytical, forensic, quality control or research chemists.
A chemist’s duties are analysing organic and inorganic compounds, determining chemical and physical properties, maintaining lab equipment, conducting tests, following and evaluating safety procedures, conferring with scientists or engineers, studying effects and purchasing laboratory supplies.
How to become a chemist? After completing a bachelor’s (BSc), master’s (MSc) or a PhD in chemistry or a closely related subject. Chemists should have a working knowledge of health and safety standards. One can benefit from previous experience working in labs or with lab equipment and instruments.
Chemist roles are available throughout the manufacturing industry. Jobs are usually in the research and development departments of companies. The most common employers are pharmaceutical and cosmetic products companies. A chemist’s salary is known to be high, depending on one’s education and experience, and success in the role.
