Computer numerically controlled tool programmers develop programs to control machining or processing of materials by automatic machine tools, equipment, or systems. They may also set up, operate, or maintain equipment.
Also known as CAD-CAM Programmer (Computer-Aided Design Computer-Aided Manufacturing Programmer), Computer Numerical Control Machinist (CNC Machinist Programmer) or Computer Numerical Control Programmer (CNC Programmer), their essential role is to arrange and operate CNC machines and gear.
The duties in a cnc programmer jobs generally include programming equipment to perform production tasks, determining production equipment settings, selecting production equipment according to product specifications, conducting test runs of production equipment, creating diagrams or blueprints for workpieces or products, verifying information or specifications, and performing basic equipment maintenance.
Employers prefer CNC programmers who have completed certification, associate degree or internship program in CNC machine operations, precision machining, machine technology or a related field. Voluntary certifications are also available.
The CNC programmer requirements are vast knowledge about computer and electronics, mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, mathematical knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus and statistics, engineering and technology and designing. The CNC programmer's salary ranges from six to seven-figure salaries.
To succeed as a CNC operator, one must possess skills such as programming, monitoring and operations monitoring, abilities such as information ordering (arranging things), near vision, perceptual speed and mathematical reasoning.
