Couriers and messengers pick up and deliver messages, documents, packages, and other items between offices or departments within an establishment or directly to other business concerns, travelling by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, automobile, or public conveyance.
The job role of a courier or a messenger is to pick up and correctly deliver letters, documents, or packages. A courier is required to maintain a record of items received and items delivered. They ensure that listed goods are loaded scientifically, as per the specified route, in the vehicles, taking precautions with hazardous goods. They then deliver the same to the recipients, as per any specified delivery instructions, and obtain an acknowledgement. Where applicable, they collect the payment and issue receipts for the monies received. They then report to their office to submit their delivery reports, an account of money collected and any undelivered letters or parcels.
Couriers and messengers indirectly play a role in the brand promotion of their employers, as often the delivery vehicles and the messengers’ uniforms bear the company’s logo. Companies benefit by hiring couriers and messengers on overheads, speed, convenience and reliability.
To be successful in courier and messenger jobs, good knowledge about the neighbourhood where deliveries are to be made is helpful, especially knowledge about internal roads and by-lanes. Efficient time management is required for delivering the articles on time.Today, being technically skilled is an added advantage, as messengers are required to work on their employer’s mobile app for delivery and navigation. Having good communication skills and a pleasant personality can enhance courier business owner's salary from tips.
