Demonstrators and product promoters demonstrate and explain products, methods, or services to persuade customers to purchase products or use services. Demonstrators need to prepare for demonstrations and research the products to be presented, sell products being promoted, keep records of sales, provide samples, coupons, informational brochures, and other incentives to persuade people to buy products.
Demonstrators’ jobs include setting up and arranging displays or demonstration areas to attract prospective customers, keeping work areas neat, returning items to correct locations following demonstrations, recording and reporting demonstration-related information, and at times wearing costumes or signboards and walking in public to promote merchandise, services, or events.
A demonstrators’ job requires candidates to have a high school diploma with some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience. The required skills include communication, persuasion, service orientation, problem-solving, critical thinking, judgement and decision making, time management and social perceptiveness. They should know about sales and marketing, customer relations, personal safety and computers. The product promotion jobs involve travelling, standing and walking for long hours, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and under time pressures.
Successful demonstrators practice hard before demonstrations, prepare themselves for all kinds of questions from prospective customers, and have knowledge of all discount and promotion schemes. In addition, the demonstrator's salary depends on the skills and experience gained in the education career.
