Education administrators (kindergarten through secondary) plan, direct, or coordinate the academic, administrative, or auxiliary activities of kindergarten, elementary, or secondary schools.
Education administrators perform the challenging task of managing teachers, parents and students, and policymakers.
Education administration job involves collaborating with teachers to develop curriculum, coordinate the activities of teachers and support staff, counsel and provide guidance to students, evaluate teaching methods to determine their effectiveness, and ensure that school activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
A master’s degree in education administration and management or a doctoral degree is required for a school administration job, with additional coursework in school law and public policy, educational technology, and instructional leadership. Previous experience in classroom teaching allows them to understand the challenges teachers face in the classroom.
School administrators work at schools, but not as teachers. They assist students, support faculty, maintain academic records, and communicate with parents. It is a demanding job and requires one to have strong leadership skills, be organized, detail-oriented, innovative, and enthusiastic. An education administrator has strong communication skills and interpersonal problem-solving skills. Most importantly, school administrators must be excellent teachers, as they serve as role models for other faculty.
Principals, or school administrators, may work year-round and usually use school breaks as a time to plan, budget, and hire teachers and professors for the academic year ahead.
To have a successful education administration career path, one must be compassionate, caring, and knowledgeable about school policies. They guide students in making tough, and sometimes life-changing decisions.

Tasks
- Review and approve new programs, or recommend modifications to existing programs, submitting program proposals for school board approval as necessary.
- Prepare, maintain, or oversee the preparation and maintenance of attendance, activity, planning, or personnel reports and records.
- Confer with parents and staff to discuss educational activities, policies, and student behavioral or learning problems.
- Prepare and submit budget requests and recommendations, or grant proposals to solicit program funding.
- Direct and coordinate school maintenance services and the use of school facilities.
- Counsel and provide guidance to students regarding personal, academic, vocational, or behavioral issues.
- Organize and direct committees of specialists, volunteers, and staff to provide technical and advisory assistance for programs.
- Teach classes or courses to students.
- Advocate for new schools to be built, or for existing facilities to be repaired or remodeled.
- Plan and develop instructional methods and content for educational, vocational, or student activity programs.
