Inspect, test, repair, or maintain electrical equipment in generating stations, substations, and in-service relays.
What is an electrical substation? It is a part of an electrical generation which has a switching, protection, control equipment, and a transmission. The workers working here inspect and test the equipment and identify the defects. They use the diagrams, and testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters to check the equipment. Their daily tasks include, preparing and maintaining records of repair, and use, consult manual, troubleshooting the problems, analyse the test data to diagnose malfunctions to evaluate the effects of the system modifications.
The Electrical and Electronics Repairers usually work in the powerhouse electrical services. To pursue a career in this field, the candidate must have passed a High School Diploma with an associate's degree, and a previous work experience.
However, to create a successful career in powerhouse electrical services, one must have a good knowledge of electrical and electronics, engineering and technology, machines and tools, production of various goods and services, knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations, with a good command of english language skills.
Besides that, electrical repairs must be proficient in using software applications such as analytical and scientific software, Megger PowerDB, Excel etc. Some of the career options in the powerhouse electrical services are - Electrical and Instrumentation Technician, Relay Technician, Wireman, Substation Mechanic etc.

Tasks
- Construct, test, maintain, and repair substation relay and control systems.
- Inspect and test equipment and circuits to identify malfunctions or defects, using wiring diagrams and testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or ammeters.
- Consult manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering personnel to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems and to determine optimum equipment functioning.
- Notify facility personnel of equipment shutdowns.
- Open and close switches to isolate defective relays, performing adjustments or repairs.
- Prepare and maintain records detailing tests, repairs, and maintenance.
- Analyze test data to diagnose malfunctions, to determine performance characteristics of systems, or to evaluate effects of system modifications.
- Test insulators and bushings of equipment by inducing voltage across insulation, testing current, and calculating insulation loss.
- Repair, replace, and clean equipment and components such as circuit breakers, brushes, and commutators.
- Disconnect voltage regulators, bolts, and screws, and connect replacement regulators to high-voltage lines.
