Electrical Power-Line Installers and Repairers
Electric power line installers install or repair cables or wires used in electrical power or distribution systems. They may erect poles and light or heavy-duty transmission towers.
Electric power line installers adhere to safety practices and procedures, such as checking equipment regularly, erecting barriers around work areas, and driving vehicles equipped with tools and materials to job sites. They further open switches or attach grounding devices to remove electrical hazards from disturbed or fallen lines or facilitate repairs and climb poles or use truck-mounted buckets to access equipment. Also, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution and transmission systems like conduits, cables, and wires are part of their job.
To become an electric power lines technician, you need to understand the construction such as materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair and knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, road, including the relative costs and benefits. Apart from these, good listening skills, visual acuity, flexibility, and quickness while operating machines and tools are much important.
To be successful in the career path of electric power lines technicians, you must be comfortable with hazardous conditions, open to face-to-face discussions, and comfortable in wearing safety equipment like gloves, shoes, glasses, hard hats amongst others. Tasks
- Adhere to safety practices and procedures, such as checking equipment regularly and erecting barriers around work areas.
- Open switches or attach grounding devices to remove electrical hazards from disturbed or fallen lines or to facilitate repairs.
- Climb poles or use truck-mounted buckets to access equipment.
- Place insulating or fireproofing materials over conductors and joints.
- Install, maintain, and repair electrical distribution and transmission systems, including conduits, cables, wires, and related equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, and switches.
- Identify defective sectionalizing devices, circuit breakers, fuses, voltage regulators, transformers, switches, relays, or wiring, using wiring diagrams and electrical-testing instruments.
- Drive vehicles equipped with tools and materials to job sites.
- Coordinate work assignment preparation and completion with other workers.
- Inspect and test power lines and auxiliary equipment to locate and identify problems, using reading and testing instruments.
- String wire conductors and cables between poles, towers, trenches, pylons, and buildings, setting lines in place and using winches to adjust tension.
