English Language and Literature Teachers, Postsecondary
English language and literature teachers (postsecondary) teach courses in English language and literature, including linguistics and comparative literature. This includes both teachers primarily engaged in teaching and those who do a combination of teaching and research.
An English language instructor teacher plays various roles such as learner, facilitator, assessor, manager and evaluator. Their responsibilities include organizing classroom lectures, and coursework and preparing materials and activities. They assign homework and interesting exercises and identify students with special requirements and create individualized plans. Moreover, they determine exam and assignment grades plus provide feedback based on workload and classroom behaviour.
The first degree an English professor needs is a Bachelor of Arts in English, which is a degree program that will teach about writing, literary criticism, English literature, poetry and drama. English professors need a PhD in English literature to be a professor. One can teach freshman writing in community colleges and sophomore literature after a master's degree. With a doctorate, a candidate gets a full-time position.
Above the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, an English literature teacher job needs excellent English pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar skills, confidence and skills to give motivating and interesting lessons to the students and possess the ability to develop their teaching materials.
To succeed as an English professor, one should be proficient with online techniques of teaching, and classroom management, form a good rapport with students and be adaptable to learn new practical ways of teaching.

- Prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate or graduate students on topics such as poetry, novel structure, and translation and adaptation.
- Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
- Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
- Compile, administer, and grade examinations, or assign this work to others.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students.
- Keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
- Select and obtain materials and supplies, such as textbooks.
