First-line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers directly supervise and coordinate work activities of cleaning personnel in establishments such as offices, hospitals and hotels by coordinating work assignments and exercises daily.
Housekeeping managers are in charge of planning employee work schedules and assisting with cleaning duties. They maintain employee work records and evaluate employee performance on a regular schedule to make sure activities meet or exceed local, state and federal safety and health regulations. They inspect facilities after employees have completed work and continuously work to create operational improvement plans.
A high school diploma is required for a housekeeping supervisors’ job. Work is learnt on the job in a few months, working with senior and experienced employees. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with janitorial occupations.
A housekeeping manager requires basic skills that include keeping track of how well people or groups are doing in order to make improvements, talking to others, problem-solving, changing what is done based on other people's actions, and looking for ways to help people.
To succeed as a housekeeping supervisor, one must be proficient with knowledge of administration and management, education and training and computers.

- Direct activities for stopping the spread of infections in facilities, such as hospitals.
- Inspect work performed to ensure that it meets specifications and established standards.
- Plan and prepare employee work schedules.
- Perform or assist with cleaning duties as necessary.
- Investigate complaints about service and equipment, and take corrective action.
- Coordinate activities with other departments to ensure that services are provided in an efficient and timely manner.
- Inspect and evaluate the physical condition of facilities to determine the type of work required.
- Select the most suitable cleaning materials for different types of linens, furniture, flooring, and surfaces.
- Instruct staff in work policies and procedures, and the use and maintenance of equipment.
- Issue supplies and equipment to workers.
