Fire prevention specialist enforce fire regulations, inspect forest for fire hazards, and recommend forest fire prevention or control measures.
Fire prevention specialists assess the outdoor fire hazards in public, and residential areas. They enforce fire regulations, inspect hazards, and control measures to prevent them. They look for fire code infractions, and conditions that cause wildfire risk. They also recommend ways to prevent any fire mishap. The fire prevention specialists also conduct patrols around the center to report the fire conditions.
Their daily tasks include relay messages about emergencies, accidents, and fire hazard conditions to the department, conduct wildland firefighting training, estimate sizes, and characteristics of fires, findings to base camp by radio and telephone.
To get fire inspector jobs, one must have the passed High School Diploma followed by a Bachelor’s Degree in the respective field with previous work experience. Besides that, the candidate must be proficient in using software like -metadata management, database user interface, linux, microsoft windows etc. Also, the fire prevention specialists must have a good knowledge of administration, management, customer and personal service, public safety, and security, education and training, and personnel and human resources.
However, to become successful in forest fire inspector jobs, one must be able to identify the strengths, and weaknesses using logic sense, problem solver, critical thinker, and must be good at making decisions, and judgements. Tasks
- Relay messages about emergencies, accidents, locations of crew and personnel, and fire hazard conditions.
- Direct crews working on firelines during forest fires.
- Estimate sizes and characteristics of fires, and report findings to base camps by radio or telephone.
- Administer regulations regarding sanitation, fire prevention, violation corrections, and related forest regulations.
- Extinguish smaller fires with portable extinguishers, shovels, and axes.
- Locate forest fires on area maps, using azimuth sighters and known landmarks.
- Maintain records and logbooks.
- Examine and inventory firefighting equipment, such as axes, fire hoses, shovels, pumps, buckets, and fire extinguishers, to determine amount and condition.
- Direct maintenance and repair of firefighting equipment, or requisition new equipment.
- Restrict public access and recreational use of forest lands during critical fire seasons.
