Grinding & polishing workers grind, sand, or polish, using hand tools or hand-held power tools, a variety of metal, wood, stone, clay, plastic, or glass objects. Includes chippers, buffers, and finishers.
Grinding & polishing workers are responsible for cleaning, polishing, and correcting any defects in the object and creating a smooth surface, from any defect using hand tools, and power tools. These workers also verify the quality of finished workpieces by inspecting them, comparing them to the templates by measuring the dimension, and testing them in working machinery. They also move, and adjust the equipment during the grinding work and polishing process.
The daily tasks of a grinding and polishing worker include, controlling the machines and processes, handling, and moving the objects, observing, receiving, and obtaining information from all the relevant resources. They also conduct physical activities to check the movement of the arms and hands while working, such as climbing, walking, lifting, running, and handling materials.
To make a career in grinding work, the candidate must have passed a High School Diploma or its equivalent with previous work experience. Besides that, the applicant must have the knowledge of raw materials, production process, machines and tools, their use, repair, and maintenance with a good command in English.
To become a successful grinding and polishing worker, one must have the ability to see details closely, adjust the controls, and understand information. Some career options are - Buffer, Casting Finisher, Knife Grinder, Jewelry Polisher etc.

Tasks
- Grind, sand, clean, or polish objects or parts to correct defects or to prepare surfaces for further finishing, using hand tools and power tools.
- Mark defects, such as knotholes, cracks, and splits, for repair.
- Move controls to adjust, start, or stop equipment during grinding and polishing processes.
- Select files or other abrasives, according to materials, sizes and shapes of workpieces, amount of stock to be removed, finishes specified, and steps in finishing processes.
- Measure and mark equipment, objects, or parts to ensure grinding and polishing standards are met.
- Verify quality of finished workpieces by inspecting them, comparing them to templates, measuring their dimensions, or testing them in working machinery.
- Record product and processing data on specified forms.
- Trim, scrape, or deburr objects or parts, using chisels, scrapers, and other hand tools and equipment.
- Remove completed workpieces from equipment or work tables, using hand tools, and place workpieces in containers.
- Load and adjust workpieces onto equipment or work tables, using hand tools.
