History teachers teach courses in human history and historiography. They include teachers primarily engaged in teaching and also those who do a combination of teaching and research.

To become a history teacher: a candidate needs to have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in history or a related subject. Furthermore, a B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) degree (or equivalent) is the minimum eligibility criteria to apply for history teacher jobs in many countries. Postsecondary history teachers teach courses in human history and historiography.
For a successful career and to earn a decent history teacher job salary, one must have good speaking, writing, reading comprehension and expression skills. Attention to detail, ability to remember dates, analyzing & critical thinking are other essential skills for a teacher of history.

- Prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate or graduate students on topics such as ancient history, postwar civilizations, and the history of third-world countries.
- Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.
- Prepare course materials, such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
- Compile, administer, and grade examinations, or assign this work to others.
- Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
- Keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
- Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
- Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students.
- Conduct research in a particular field of knowledge and publish findings in professional journals, books, or electronic media.
