Hospitalists
Hospitalists provide inpatient care predominantly in settings such as medical wards, acute care units, intensive care units, rehabilitation centres, or emergency rooms. They manage and coordinate patient care throughout treatment.
Hospitalists are doctors who specialize in providing care for patients at a hospital.
Even though they may spend time in the emergency room, a physician hospitalist is not the same as an emergency doctor. An academic hospitalist's jobs cover the gap in care from primary care doctor to hospital, or from the emergency room back to primary care.
They manage patients of their arrival at the hospital throughout their stay. They work with the primary care doctors and follow up with them after the patients are discharged.
Physician hospitalists do work similar to the work of a hospitalist vs primary care doctor, except they work in a hospital setting. Hospitalists have specialized training in ordering and evaluating diagnostic tests, the transition of care to specialists, and palliative care. They specialise in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of illnesses, provide answers to patients’ questions and specialise in communication, rapid diagnosis, and acute medical care. The hospitalist nurse practitioner's salary can vary from the skills and experience gained during their education and training career.
Hospitalists are highly educated and trained individuals, having undergone years of general and specialized education at a medical school.
Internal medicine hospitalists can be consulted for medical conditions including sudden unexplainable pain, pneumonia infection, asthma attack, broken bones, bronchitis, heart attack or respiratory disease.
The ultimate goal of a physician hospitalist is to help patients recover, leave the hospital, and return everyday.

Tasks
- Refer patients to medical specialists, social services, or other professionals as appropriate.
- Participate in continuing education activities to maintain or enhance knowledge and skills.
- Direct, coordinate, or supervise the patient care activities of nursing or support staff.
- Write patient discharge summaries and send them to primary care physicians.
- Direct the operations of short stay or specialty units.
- Train or supervise medical students, residents, or other health professionals.
- Prescribe medications or treatment regimens to hospital inpatients.
- Order or interpret the results of tests such as laboratory tests and radiographs (x-rays).
- Attend inpatient consultations in areas of specialty.
- Conduct discharge planning and discharge patients.
