Locksmiths and safe repairers repair and open locks, make keys, change locks and safe combinations, and install and repair safes.
The job responsibilities of a locksmith are to cut new or duplicate keys using key cutting machines. They disassemble mechanical or electrical locking devices and repair or replace worn tumblers, springs and other parts using hand tools. Besides, they cut new or duplicate keys using impression key machines and open safe locks by drilling. Safe technicians also install door hardware, such as locks and closers.
Though there are no specific qualification requirements needed to become a locksmith, one should take up training courses due to the nature of work involved in locksmithing.
Pay for a locksmith varies depending on experience, fees and location.
Locksmiths need to have information on master keying, key making and key cutting for different lock types, safes and locking mechanisms. They should know how to lock repair methods and locksmith workshop equipment, security alarm systems and electronic security systems.
Safe technicians work at regular business hours, on-call and work at night or during weekends. They often work from a mobile workshop in a van and travel within their region to do jobs at businesses, private homes and vehicles.
There are various locksmith schools online or in-person that teach courses on basic lock-picking, automotive locksmithing, alarm systems, high-security locks, combination locks and lock hardware, biometric scanners, security cameras etc. which are essential for a successful, safe technician career.

- Repair and adjust safes, vault doors, and vault components, using hand tools, lathes, drill presses, and welding and acetylene cutting apparatus.
- Install safes, vault doors, and deposit boxes according to blueprints, using equipment such as power drills, taps, dies, truck cranes, and dollies.
- Open safe locks by drilling.
- Remove interior and exterior finishes on safes and vaults, and spray on new finishes.
- Cut new or duplicate keys, using impressions or code key machines.
