Maintenance and Repair Workers, General
Maintenance and repair workers (general) perform work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep machines, mechanical equipment, or the structure of a building in repair. Their duties may involve pipe fitting; HVAC maintenance; insulating; welding; machining; carpentry; repairing electrical or mechanical equipment; installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment; and repairing buildings, floors, or stairs.
A maintenance and repair worker job’s description involves inspection, maintenance, and repair of various types of equipment or components. The daily job duties of a maintainer depend on the industry in which they work. In the repair and maintenance work, a maintainer works alongside fully qualified maintenance technicians to learn the skills of the trade. One is responsible to assist with a variety of duties, including installing equipment, maintaining mechanical systems, and repairing machines.
A maintenance worker's resume requires some proven maintenance experience. Above the high school diploma, a related degree from a technical college is desired. Besides, repair and maintenance jobs require efficiency in the use of hand and power tools, and the ability to take apart machines, equipment, or devices to remove and replace defective parts. They should be able to use common tools and have good experience with electronic testing devices.
To succeed as a repair worker, strong organizational skills, professional attitude, focus and time management abilities are advantageous.

Tasks
- Assemble, install, or repair wiring, electrical or electronic components, pipe systems, plumbing, machinery, or equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.
- Inspect, operate, or test machinery or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions.
- Record type and cost of maintenance or repair work.
- Clean or lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, or other parts of machinery.
- Plan and lay out repair work, using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals, or schematic diagrams.
- Adjust functional parts of devices or control instruments, using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, or straightedges.
- Paint or repair roofs, windows, doors, floors, woodwork, plaster, drywall, or other parts of building structures.
- Operate cutting torches or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
- Align and balance new equipment after installation.
