Models model garments or other apparel and accessories for prospective buyers at fashion shows, private showings, or retail establishments. They may pose for photos to be used in magazines or advertisements and pose as subjects for paintings, sculptures, and other types of artistic expression.
Models highlight and promote clothing, footwear, accessories and other body products. They represent designers and brands and star in media such as commercials, magazines, newspapers, photoshoots, and print or image/video ads. There can be different types of models such as art, figure, studio, nude, lingerie, fashion, and editorial models among others.
How to become a model? Models primarily have to pose for photoshoots, film commercials or participate in fashion shows. They receive instructions from photographers/directors and work alongside other artists like make-up, fashion or hair. Other duties of models include maintaining physical appearance, promoting products and services, and keeping up-to-date portfolios.
How to start a modelling career? One usually starts by reaching out to agencies with photographic examples of their modelling work. There may be interviews, and successful candidates are given gigs through agencies or model scouts, who are always on the look for new talent. Though there is no education requirement, one can benefit by attending modelling or fashion school.
Models may be employed full-time, in contracts or work as freelancers. Models of higher profiles such as editorial models usually hire agents or representatives to handle their operations for them. Modelling work may attract attention from the general public and media.
To have a successful modelling career, one should have no problem facing the camera and have a confident personality. Other useful skills include communication, attention to detail and art.

- Assemble and maintain portfolios, print composite cards, and travel to go-sees to obtain jobs.
- Work closely with photographers, fashion coordinators, directors, producers, stylists, make-up artists, other models, and clients to produce the desired looks, and to finish photo shoots on schedule.
- Apply makeup to face and style hair to enhance appearance, considering such factors as color, camera techniques, and facial features.
- Display clothing and merchandise in commercials, advertisements, or fashion shows.
- Promote products and services in television commercials, on film, or in videos.
