Network and Computer Systems Administrators
Network and computer systems administrators install, configure, and maintain an organization's local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), data communications network, operating systems, and physical and virtual servers. They perform system monitoring and verify the integrity and availability of hardware, network, and server resources and systems. Besides, they review system and application logs and verify the completion of scheduled jobs, including system backups. They analyze network and server resource consumption and control user access. Above that, they install and upgrade software and maintain software licenses. They may assist in network modelling, analysis, planning, and coordination between network and data communications hardware and software.
To work as a network administrator, one should earn at least a bachelor's degree with certificates in software engineering, computer science, and relevant fields to gain an entry-level position in network administration.
As network administrators help professionals manage computer networks for organizations or clients, they only work with computer systems or the people who use them. Network administrators need both soft and hard skills.
System admin jobs involve maintenance, configuration, and reliable operation of computer systems and servers. Administrators ardently resolve computer and server systems issues to limit work interruptions within the company. System admin jobs are found in various settings from financial firms to hospitals or local government offices.
To be successful in network administration, a network administrator must acquire fundamental knowledge of networking concepts, computing infrastructures, hands-on technical troubleshooting capabilities, the ability to work independently under minimal supervision and efficiency in network engineering, network operations and performance analysis skills.

Tasks
- Perform data backups and disaster recovery operations.
- Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
- Plan, coordinate, and implement network security measures to protect data, software, and hardware.
- Operate master consoles to monitor the performance of computer systems and networks, and to coordinate computer network access and use.
- Perform routine network startup and shutdown procedures, and maintain control records.
- Design, configure, and test computer hardware, networking software and operating system software.
- Recommend changes to improve systems and network configurations, and determine hardware or software requirements related to such changes.
- Confer with network users about how to solve existing system problems.
- Monitor network performance to determine whether adjustments need to be made, and to determine where changes will need to be made in the future.
- Train people in computer system use.
