Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons perform surgery and related procedures on the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions to treat diseases, injuries, or defects. They mostly diagnose problems in the oral and maxillofacial regions. They also perform surgery to improve function or appearance.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are responsible for administering anaesthetics or sedatives to control pain, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to provide treatment. Their job involves analysing patients’ data to determine their treatment goals and performing oral and maxillofacial surgery on patients to treat conditions and treat acute illnesses, infections, or injuries.
The practise of oral and maxillofacial surgery involves complex procedures and specialized knowledge. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon's jobs include combining both dental and medical expertise, thereby holding both degrees to treat patients.
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon's salary in India ranges from seven-eight figures. A bachelor's program that focuses heavily on biology, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, chemistry and mathematics can help prepare them for dental school and surgical training. The next step is to take and pass the Dental Admissions Test (or equivalent) which evaluates your abilities in biological and physiological subjects, along with your logical reasoning, comprehension and math skills. And finally, enrol in a complete dental school and complete an approved surgical residency. Eventually, you can apply for state licensure.

- Administer general and local anesthetics.
- Remove impacted, damaged, and non-restorable teeth.
- Evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth to determine whether problems exist currently or might occur in the future.
- Collaborate with other professionals, such as restorative dentists and orthodontists, to plan treatment.
- Perform surgery to prepare the mouth for dental implants, and to aid in the regeneration of deficient bone and gum tissues.
- Remove tumors and other abnormal growths of the oral and facial regions, using surgical instruments.
- Treat infections of the oral cavity, salivary glands, jaws, and neck.
- Treat problems affecting the oral mucosa, such as mouth ulcers and infections.
- Provide emergency treatment of facial injuries including facial lacerations, intra-oral lacerations, and fractured facial bones.
- Perform surgery on the mouth and jaws to treat conditions, such as cleft lip and palate and jaw growth problems.
