Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters assemble, install, alter, and repair pipelines or pipe systems that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases. They install heating and cooling equipment and mechanical control systems which include sprinkler fitters.
As the demand in this industry is growing, pursuing a career as a pipefitter is rewarding, both financially and personally. The plumber's job description is to cut metal components for installation. Besides, they fabricate parts or components and create construction or installation diagrams. They also inspect plumbing systems or fixtures and do the installation work, plumbing or piping.
To be eligible to become a pipefitter, one needs to complete high school and go to vocational schools that offer courses on pipe system design, safety, and tool use. They also offer welding courses that are considered necessary by some pipefitter and steamfitter internships training programs. Most plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters learn their trade through a 4 or 5-year work experience and the plumber's salary depends on the experience. Internships are 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training, as well as some classroom instruction.
Pipefitter jobs can be found at utility companies, gas plants, hospitals, chemical plants, oil refineries, building companies, heating and air ventilation companies, and construction firms.
For a career success as a pipefitter, one should possess skills and knowledge of cutting and welding techniques, an aptitude to understand blueprints, and a background with tools and equipment used on the job.
