Postal Service Clerks
Postal service clerks perform any combination of tasks for national or private post offices, such as receiving letters and parcels; selling postage and revenue stamps, postal cards, and stamped envelopes; filling out and selling money orders; placing mail in pigeon holes of mail rack or bags, and examining mail for correct postage.
The job of the post office clerk is to deal directly with clients of the post office by providing services such as selling stamps, receiving postal articles and handling saving accounts. Postal clerks do numerous office jobs which include bookkeeping, receiving telegrams and executing various other clerical duties.
An aspirant candidate for postal clerk must complete high school to be admitted for in-the-job training. Subjects of mathematics and accountancy are highly recommended. They must have good qualities to run the post office smoothly and avail of the five-digit poster clerk salary. Along with knowledge of different languages, numerical ability and excellent memory, sincerity, trustworthiness, excellent communication skills, they should have the ability to deal with the stress of long work hours and difficult clients. They should be people, responsive, supportive and lenient.
Post office clerks mostly work at post offices/government post offices and vacancies are found throughout the world. An efficient postal clerk may be promoted to training officer and postmaster.
To be a success in the postal service clerk job, one should be able to use numbers and handle cash precisely, concentrate while handing important documents and be polite and helpful when communicating with customers.

Tasks
- Keep money drawers in order, and record and balance daily transactions.
- Weigh letters and parcels, compute mailing costs based on type, weight, and destination, and affix correct postage.
- Obtain signatures from recipients of registered or special delivery mail.
- Register, certify, and insure letters and parcels.
- Sell and collect payment for products such as stamps, prepaid mail envelopes, and money orders.
- Check mail to ensure correct postage and that packages and letters are in proper condition for mailing.
- Answer questions regarding mail regulations and procedures, postage rates, and post office boxes.
- Complete forms regarding changes of address, or theft or loss of mail, or for special services such as registered or priority mail.
- Provide assistance to the public in complying with federal regulations of Postal Service and other federal agencies.
- Sort incoming and outgoing mail, according to type and destination, by hand or by operating electronic mail-sorting and scanning devices.
