Postmasters and mail superintendents plan, direct, or coordinate operational, administrative, management, and support services of the post offices; or coordinate activities of workers engaged in postal and related work in the assigned post office.
Postmaster's general job description includes preparing staff schedules or work assignments. Other responsibilities include directing organizational operations, projects, or services and resolving customer complaints or problems. Besides directing administrative services, they also conduct employee training programs.
Aspirants of postmaster jobs are expected to have a varied background in postal operations that include processing and delivering mail and working directly with customers. It is desirable for postmaster candidates to have completed the relevant internal training. Educational qualifications such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business or a related field can be an advantage for the applicant for this position.
The postmaster's salary commensurates with their years of experience, position and size of the post office.
Along with knowledge of management principles, a postmaster should also possess the technical skills and knowledge of software programs used to fulfil daily responsibilities. What did the postmaster do then? All postmaster jobs are carried out under the guidance of the mail superintendent who is the head of the postal service department.
