Roof bolters mining operate machinery to install roof support bolts in underground mines.
Roof bolters mining work in the mining industry in the underground mines. They secure the roof of the mines with bolts to prevent it from mine cave-ins. Their daily tasks include drilling bolt holes into roofs at specified distances from ribs and adjacent bolts, performing safety checks on the equipment before using, performing tests to determine if methane gas is present, roof stitching in mining etc.
To pursue a career as roof bolters mining, a high school diploma with experience is required. Also, the candidates must have a good knowledge of raw materials, quality control, costs, using techniques for effective manufacturing, machines and tools, principles and methods for curriculum, and training design, knowledge of equipment, policies, procedure, national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. Besides that, the applicant must be proficient in using the softwares such as data entry, caterpillar command, ERP etc. to get achieve a good roof bolter salary.
To become successful in roof stitching in mining, the candidate must have the ability to control operations of the equipment, monitor every individual, determine causes of any error, watching gauges, and indicators to ensure the machine is working properly, ability to move hands easily and assemble the parts, and listen the instructions carefully. Tasks
- Drill bolt holes into roofs at specified distances from ribs or adjacent bolts.
- Force bolts into holes, using hydraulic mechanisms of self-propelled bolting machines.
- Remove drill bits from chucks after drilling holes and insert bolts into chucks.
- Position safety jacks to support underground mine roofs until bolts can be installed.
- Position bolting machines, and insert drill bits into chucks.
- Rotate chucks to turn bolts and open expansion heads against rock formations.
- Tighten ends of anchored truss bolts, using turnbuckles.
- Pull down loose rock that cannot be supported.
- Perform safety checks on equipment before operating.
- Perform tests to determine if methane gas is present.
