Teaching Assistants, Postsecondary
Teaching assistants (postsecondary) assist faculty or other instructional staff in postsecondary institutions by performing instructional support activities, such as developing teaching materials, leading discussion groups, preparing and giving examinations, and grading examinations or papers.
Graduate teaching assistants are usually the graduate students who help faculty members or other instructional staff at postsecondary educational institutions by teaching or performing teaching-related duties. Their responsibilities include preparing and assigning course materials and developing and administering quizzes and exams.
To be a graduate teaching assistant, the candidate should first complete a bachelor's degree and subsequently enrol in a graduate program. The candidate will be an enrolled graduate student working towards either a master's degree or a doctorate for the entire time with teaching assistant skills.
Above being self-motivated with excellent interpersonal skills, additional teaching assistant skills and competencies desired from a graduate teaching assistant are the ability to work well independently and in groups, supervise and lead groups, pursue work with creativity and neat presentation skills.
To succeed in this role, the teaching assistants’ skills should be clear and demonstrative. One should set clear expectations and goals. The teaching assistant salary might vary according to the position or designation of the job. The most important thing one can do is help students succeed in a class by clearly communicating the expectations in learning and demonstration of knowledge

Tasks
- Lead discussion sections, tutorials, or laboratory sections.
- Evaluate and grade examinations, assignments, or papers, and record grades.
- Return assignments to students in accordance with established deadlines.
- Schedule and maintain regular office hours to meet with students.
- Inform students of the procedures for completing and submitting class work, such as lab reports.
- Prepare or proctor examinations.
- Notify instructors of errors or problems with assignments.
- Meet with supervisors to discuss students' grades or to complete required grade-related paperwork.
- Copy and distribute classroom materials.
- Demonstrate use of laboratory equipment and enforce laboratory rules.
