Textile knitting and weaving machine setters, operators, and tenders set up operate or tend machines that knit, loop, weave or draw in textiles.
The job of a textile machine operator job description is to setter, operator and tender including removing defects in cloth by cutting and pulling out filling, ascertaining if products meet specifications, detecting weaving defects, thread yarn and fabric through guides, needles, and rollers of machines for weaving, knitting, or other processing.
Textile machines or weaving machine operators also maintain the machines by regular cleaning and lubricating and checking for defects that may require repairs. They also install, level, and align machine components such as gears, chains, guides, dies, cutters, or needles to set up machinery for operation. They may also program electronic equipment.
They maintain records of machine settings and logs of daily production, raw material, workers and other records.
Basic high school learning is required as most skills of the trade are learnt on the job. Workers require knowledge of administration and management, production and processing, customer and personal service and human resources. The required skills are knitting machine operation monitoring, finger dexterity, control precision and multi-limb coordination amongst others.
Textile machine or weaving machine operators find jobs in fabric mills, furnishing and knitting mills, fibre, yarn and thread mills and earn knitting machine operator salaries based on the working hours.

Tasks
- Remove defects in cloth by cutting and pulling out filling.
- Inspect products to ensure that specifications are met and to determine if machines need adjustment.
- Observe woven cloth to detect weaving defects.
- Thread yarn, thread, and fabric through guides, needles, and rollers of machines for weaving, knitting, or other processing.
- Examine looms to determine causes of loom stoppage, such as warp filling, harness breaks, or mechanical defects.
- Notify supervisors or repair staff of mechanical malfunctions.
- Set up, or set up and operate textile machines that perform textile processing and manufacturing operations such as winding, twisting, knitting, weaving, bonding, or stretching.
- Start machines, monitor operations, and make adjustments as needed.
- Inspect machinery to determine whether repairs are needed.
- Record information about work completed and machine settings.
