Traffic Technicians
Traffic technicians conduct field studies to determine traffic volume, speed, the effectiveness of signals, adequacy of lighting, and other factors influencing traffic conditions, under the direction of traffic engineers.
A traffic control technician job is to analyze traffic data, arrange maintenance activities, identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, prepare drawings or diagrams and compile operational data.
Traffic control technicians (TCT) usually work with construction teams to ensure that vehicles do not interfere with or pose a danger to labourers and their projects.
In a traffic technician career, many technical colleges and technical institutes offer engineering degrees which include courses in statistics, mathematics and city planning. An associate's degree in civil engineering technology or a bachelors degree in civil engineering technology, traffic engineering or transport engineering are examples of the types of degrees needed to become a traffic signal technician.
A traffic tech is a skilled worker who works mostly under a civil engineer and specializes in the technical aspects of controlling and reviewing traffic and vehicles. One needs to have excellent math, problem-solving and communication skills. Analytical thinking and coordination skills are also important to a traffic tech. The ability to apply the analysis of statistical data to real-life situations, such as determining road patterns or placement of traffic control devices, is essential to success in the field.

Tasks
- Interact with the public to answer traffic-related questions, respond to complaints or requests, or discuss traffic control ordinances, plans, policies, or procedures.
- Prepare drawings of proposed signal installations or other control devices, using drafting instruments or computer-automated drafting equipment.
- Plan, design, and improve components of traffic control systems to accommodate current or projected traffic and to increase usability and efficiency.
- Analyze data related to traffic flow, accident rates, or proposed development to determine the most efficient methods to expedite traffic flow.
- Prepare work orders for repair, maintenance, or changes in traffic systems.
- Study factors affecting traffic conditions, such as lighting or sign and marking visibility, to assess their effectiveness.
- Visit development or work sites to determine projects' effect on traffic and the adequacy of traffic control and safety plans or to suggest traffic control measures.
- Lay out pavement markings for striping crews.
- Operate counters and record data to assess the volume, type, and movement of vehicular or pedestrian traffic at specified times.
- Provide technical supervision regarding traffic control devices to other traffic technicians or laborers.
